About this indicator

This is the share of rural Grade 5 children who can read a much simpler Grade 2 level text, a widely used check on whether years in school are translating into basic reading ability. It is a survey of foundational learning rather than curriculum coverage, so it exposes gaps that pass-rates and enrolment figures can hide. It covers rural children and is based on sample-based household surveys, so year-to-year movements should be read as trends rather than precise counts.
