Percentage of births in the 5 years before the survey that took place in a health facility, for each Tamil Nadu district. District analogue of the state institutional-delivery indicator. NFHS-5 (2019-21).

About this indicator

This is the share of births within a district that take place in a health facility rather than at home, a key marker of access to skilled care during childbirth. Facility birth sharply reduces risks that arise during and just after delivery, which is why it is tracked closely at district level. Because much of Tamil Nadu already delivers in facilities, remaining district gaps often reflect specific access barriers in remote or underserved pockets rather than broad avoidance of the health system.

Methodology & notes

NFHS-5 (2019-21), official IIPS district fact sheets. 32 districts: TN's NFHS-5 fieldwork predates the 32->38 district reorganisation, so the 6 newer districts have no separate NFHS-5 data. Frozen at NFHS-5 until NFHS-6 is released.
