About this indicator
This estimates the average number of years a newborn would live if current age-specific death rates held for its whole life, so it is a snapshot of present mortality conditions rather than a forecast for any actual child. It summarises health across all ages into one figure and is driven heavily by deaths in infancy and old age. It is published as a multi-year rolling average from sample registration, so it moves slowly and lags recent shocks or improvements.
Tamil Nadu's Life expectancy rose from 70.6 yrs (2010-14) to 72.8 yrs (2017-21).
