About this indicator

This is the share of births that occur in a health facility with trained staff on hand, rather than at home, and is a core measure of safe-childbirth access. Facility delivery allows rapid response to complications during and immediately after birth, which is central to reducing maternal and newborn deaths. As institutional delivery approaches near-universal levels, the headline number stops discriminating, so the more meaningful question becomes the quality of care received, not just the location of birth.

Methodology & notes

NFHS asks women aged 15-49 about live births in the past 5 years. Series spans NFHS-4 (2015-16), NFHS-5 (2019-21), and NFHS-6 (2023-24). HMIS facility-reports differ as the denominator is reported deliveries.
