About this indicator

This estimates what rural residents pay from their own pockets for hospital stays, averaged across the whole population and net of any reimbursement, so it reflects both how much care people use and how much of its cost falls on households. A higher figure is not automatically worse, because it can mean people are using hospitals more, not that they are less protected, which is the key confound to keep in mind. Free or insured public care, such as government schemes and pooled drug supply, can lower this spend by shifting costs off households.

Methodology & notes

NSSO CAMS 2022-23 (NSS Report No. 590, Table 11), average out-of-pocket medical expenditure per person on hospitalisation over a 365-day reference period, net of reimbursement. Reported separately for rural and urban; the source has no combined column, so none is computed. Levels partly reflect hospital utilisation, not only cost per episode: Tamil Nadu's public hospitals are near-free per admission but its residents are hospitalised more often, which lifts per-person spending.
