About this indicator

This is the share of children under five in a district who are too short for their age, a marker of chronic undernutrition that reflects cumulative deprivation in diet, health, and sanitation rather than short-term hunger. Because stunting builds up over the first years of life, it captures conditions during pregnancy and infancy and changes slowly. District figures come from periodic large surveys, so they are best read as the situation around the survey period rather than the current month.

Methodology & notes

NFHS-5 (2019-21), official IIPS district fact sheets. 32 districts: TN's NFHS-5 fieldwork predates the 32->38 district reorganisation, so the 6 newer districts have no separate NFHS-5 data. Frozen at NFHS-5 until NFHS-6 is released.
